With the Bluetooth connection included in easy12, you can for example send SMS messages from esys, while your phone is in your handbag. esys40 is designed with the office use in mind; connexion to the computer (desktop or laptop) is done via either a Bluetooth (wireless) connexion or an USB port. esys40 also integrates a Braille Keyboard and an internal memory which permits some note taking, which also make it a good mobility solution. Both esys12 and esys40 include the following functionalities: PC connexion via USB or Bluetooth, connexion to a mobile phone via Bluetooth, Note-taker, Calculator, Alarm Clock, mini SD card slot; this card is used to save the notes taken on esys (in .txt format) and to update its firmware. Routine cursor line, 2 mini joysticks and navigation keys are integrated too. 1.1.2 Compliance to international regulations esys is CE compliant, and respects the following international norms : NFEN60950 (security) and et EN55022 Class B edition 1994 (electro-magnetic compatibility). esys’ power supply adaptor supports Class 2 power limitation. If you need to replace the power supply adaptor, you must take one with identical technical features. It is strongly recommended to contact Eurobraille or your local distributor in case of power supply failure. The stand-by button does not make up the power tension cutting off system. As a result, when the power supply adaptor is connected to a wall-plug, the battery is recharging, even if the device is sleeping. So, in order to cut off power supply, you need to unplug the device. Make sure you have an easy access to a wall-plug. In case of technical failure, maintenance operations are carried out in Eurobraille headquarters. As the device may cause damage for you because of dangerous electrical tensions, it is strongly recommended not to open it. Doing that would also make your rights of warranty or maintenance invalid. 1.1.3 Device description and start-up esys has on both flanks sets of safety very low tension connectors (TBTS). On the left side, from back to front: power supply connector to plug esys power supply mini USB2 connection (Mitsumi compatible), to connect esys to a PC small raised round ridge with a hole in its centre enabling to reset the device with a straightened paper clip. This should be carried out exceptionally only if the device is blocked. On the right side, from back to front: a stand-by button enabling to power on/off esys a horizontal slot for mini SD-card To power the device on, simply press the stand-by button. The Braille display immediately shows the main menu. If not, it means that the battery is completely discharged; in that case, you need to plug it to its power supply adaptor so that you can use it immediately. Precautions of use: The USB connector can be plugged only one way. Do not try to force it if you plug it wrong, you may heavily damage the connector. The flat side should be plugged downwise, and the bent side upwise. Plugging/unplugging a mini SD-card should be carried out gently. The mini SD-card slot has an auto-locking equipment, you just need to press, then release it in order to unlock the card. To lock the mini SD-card into the device, you have to insert it a bit further than its original locking position. The mini SD-card side with a notch should be oriented to the front of the device. Moreover, you should not unplug the mini SD-card while the device is working, because some files may be opened and could therefore be damaged. To unplug the mini SD-card, you first need to close the file you’ve opened in the note-taker if necessary, then, toggle to sleeping mode. Once you’re done, the pins of the Braille display should erase partially and should become sleepy. 1.1.4 General features esys is equipped with a 12 / 40 cell-piezo-electrical Braille display. Just above each cell, you can find a push-button that enables to interact with the character displayed on the corresponding Braille cell, those push-buttons are also called cursor routing keys. Image 1: Braille cell 1    4 2    5 3    6 7    8 esys comes with two 5 contact-joystick keys (left, right, up, down and middle). Each of them will be called for the left joystick key, and for the right one in this manual. esys possesses 2 wheels with three contact points (right, left and middle) for the 12 cells version and 4 wheels for the 40 cells version. All wheels have the same function regardless of which wheel you are using. In this Manual, these wheels will be noted The lithium Ion batteries include inside the device allow for a 20 hours continuous use; recharging time is four hours ; you can recharge esys on a normal wall plug or via a USB port. esys does not have an ON/OFF button but a stand-by mode in which it can remain for 10 days. You will not need to go through a full discharge of the device to start charging it. Recharging starts automatically as soon as esys is connected to its battery block, whether it is on sleep or not ; charging will take slightly longer if esys is used simultaneously. esys can have a USB connexion or a Bluetooth connexion to a computer, which enables it to run with software like Jaws, Windows Eyes, HAL, Cobra or readMATH. You can also connect esys via Bluetooth to a Mobile phone with Talks, Mobile Speak or Mobile Accessibility, or to a PDA (via Bluetooth) with Mobile Speak Pocket or Pocket HAL. esys12 total weight is 200 gr, with dimensions : 14,5 cm x 8,6 cm x 2 cm. esys40 total weight is 500 gr, with dimensions : 32,5 cm x 8,6 cm x 2 cm. 1.1.5 What’s in the pack Your esys Power supply 5V/1A, Mini USB2 cable (Mitsubi compatible) to connect to a PC, 128 Mo Mini SD memory card Mini SD – SD adaptor Carrying bag and string (only for esys12 Documentation and Drivers on a CD 1 year warranty 2 USING YOUR ESYS 2.1 General Functions In order to switch the unit on or off, please press and immediately release the stand-by button. Upon switching on the unit, on the Braille display the main menu appears: esys:bluetooth usb notepad calculator alarm-clock tools T If you wish to continue further on the displayed text in Braille (beyond the 12 or 40 cells), use the wheel to go right until you reach the “T” sign. This sign is used to show the end of the items contained in esys. One of the important concepts in using esys is the hierarchy of menu items and the organisation of elements. In this Manual, we will use the term of infant-object in the case of an item that is contained and father-object for an item that is containing other ones. For example, if you click on the word “calculator” by pressing one of the cursor routing keys above that word, you will display all the items in the calculator object ; the calculator will appear in an abbreviated word as a father-object (clc) with the infant-objects displayed after the punctuation sign : , as follows. clc:operators memory currency T You can see that this calculator object, which previously was an infant-object (or menu item), has become displayed at the beginning of the text, thus becoming a father-object. You can continue doing this, for example by clicking on one of the cursor routing above the “operator” item; operator becomes a father-object displayed in abbreviated form at the beginning (opr) and you can see after the punctuation sign : its infant-objects. opr:equal addition subtraction multiplication division percentage square square’root T By using these two selections, you have gone down in the menu structure by two levels. esys software works with a menu structure, which will allow you to eventually select and trigger a command. Should this command require you to choose amongst options, a dialog box is used. As you get used to esys, you will notice that using such menus make it easy and intuitive to make the device work as you intend it to. 2.2 In case of troubles The warranty period on your esys is 1 year. If your esys is locked or doesn’t want to start, please try the followng steps before sen dit back to Eurobraille. Plug esys to its power supply. Find something thin and rigid to insert into the small hole you will find on the left side of your esys and press softly. Doing this, you will reset you esys to factory default. esys will start in test mode (1 raised dot moving cell by cell); press one on left joystick to acced to main menu. If even after resetting esys will not start, maybe the battery level is too low and you need to charge it for a while before reset again. If of course you have no result after some times, please call Eurobraille or your local distributor to know how to send esys back for repairing. 3 USING ITEMS AND OBJECTS 3.1 Item identification, associated value and separator. The identifier of an item is its name and, for certain items, an associated value. A value is assigned to a name preceding it by the sign (>). A separator (such as an empty space or a column (:)) will follow an identifier, depending on whether it is a father-object or an infant-object; a father-object is placed at the beginning of a line. If the identifier contains a space, its Braille reproduction will be, for the space, a Braille cell with dot8 raised. The shortcut letter (command) used to activate a menu item directly is underlined with the dot7 raised. Blinking dots 7 and 8 indicate the position of the cursor or of the highlighted text. 3.2 Simple items Simple items are items without an associated value. You will find such items in menus or dialog boxes for example, such as in: info:The file already exists, do you want to replace it? Yes no cancel T This dialog box includes 4 simple items which are the text: “This file already exists, do you want to replace it ?” as well as the three buttons : “yes”, “no” and “cancel”. In order to activate one of those buttons, you can use, either the cursor routing keys, or the 9A keys combination (after having put the focus on the button) or by pressing centrally on RJ (after putting the focus on the correct button). Note: Texts cannot be activated, pressing on one of those keys while being on text will not do anything. 3.3 Items with an associated value When a value needs to be associated with an item, it will appear after the (>) sign. Examples of such items are edit boxes, dialog boxes that are not editable, lists and trees structure. 3.3.1 Edit Box The value included in an Edit Box can be changed by the user. You will find several examples of edit boxes while using esys. One example of such edit boxes occurs when typing in a file name: file>mydocument.txt You can change the value or the text inside an edit box when the cursor is situated in the editable zone (between the > sign and the end of the value). Click on one of the cursor keys directly above the value editing zone in order to edit it. This action will turn the > sign into a < sign. The < sign means that you are currently editing the value in the edit box. You can then type in whichever value / text that is appropriate. If you want to select the whole text in an edit box (for example to cancel it at once), you will need to click on a cursor key situated above the name of the edit box (“file” in this sample). The 9A keys combination will enable you, when used in the context of an edit box, to execute a specific action. If you are in the “File Name” edit box, which is included in the “Save As” dialog box, then using the 9A keys combination will make you save the file. If you are on other edit boxes, using the 9A keys will help you to access the edit box or to exit the edit box. (for example in the case of the clock settings). 3.3.2 Information boxes These dialogs are used to give information that is not editable, such as the battery tension. No action is possible on such items. voltage>3.92 3.3.3 Lists Lists will enable you to choose a value in a list of different possible values: for example, you will use a list when selecting the month of the current time. month>january In order to select an item in a list, you will first need to put the focus on the item (make sure that dots7 and8 are blinking on the first letter of the item). If you want to go down on the list, use the down position of the RJ. Use the up position of the RJ to go up one item in the list. You can type down or up arrow by using Bramigraph (standard keyboard emulation) on the Braille Keyboard to navigate lists as well. 3.3.4 Trees structures Trees are used to display the structure of folders and files on the mini-SD card. File names are displayed as follows: the item name (which is before the > sign) is the name of the folder in which you are. The item value (which is after the > sign) is the content of the folder. The value can either be another folder (in which case the first letter of the value will be a d) or a file (in which case the first letter will be an f). If you click (with routine cursor keys, 9A keys or joystick) on the focused value, will either display the tree position of the folder or open the file. If you want to move back up one level in the tree structure, you can either click on the tree name, using the cursor routing keys, the Backspace command (when the focus is on the tree name) or the LJ Left + RJ Middle. 3.4 Dialog Boxes In a dialog box, you will be asked to make choices by pressing on the « OK » « Cancel » « Yes » and « No » buttons. Doing this will then close the dialog box. A dialog box is considered as a parent-object, and thus may contain infant-objects such as : buttons, texts, edit boxes or trees structure. 3.5 Activating an item You can activate any item by pressing a cursor routing key just above the item’s identifier. You can activate an item from the Braille keypad by pressing on the 9A keys combination; you will then activate the focused item (the focus represented by blinking dots 7 and 8). You can activate an item by pressing centrally on the joystick (once again on the focused item). Also, if you are not currently editing a value in an edit box, you can activate an item by typing the key letter of the item (the one with a raised dot 7). Activating an item will result in different possibilities, depending on the type of item and is status. For example, in an edit box, activating will make you enter or exit the editable zone. 3.6 Focus You can change the focus position, item by item, by moving the Right Joystick (RJ) either LEFT or RIGHT. The focus is displayed by blinking dots 7 and 8 on the first letter of an item ; if the focus is located on the “key letter” of an item, dot 7 will be raised and 8 will be blinking. If you don’t make any action for a while (i.e. moving the focus), the blinking will stop after 15 seconds. Moving the focus will only work on infant-objects. You will need to move the navigation wheels in order to see the parent-object. Remember that you can activate a focused item by pressing the 9A keys combination (Enter). 3.7 Using the joysticks and the navigation wheels. On the esys, you will find two joysticks on the right and on the left of the Braille line. These joysticks are labelled LJ for the left joystick and RJ for the right joystick. They both have different functions. Left Joystick LJ: Pressing centrally on the Left Joystick (LJ) will display the application menu. Pressing centrally a second time will display the main menu of the esys. The four directions (UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT) of the Joystick are used in combination with actions on the right joystick or navigation wheels to create shortcuts ; for example, by using the LEFT direction on the LJ and pushing on of the wheels towards the left, you will go back to the beginning of a line. Right Joystick LJ: Pressing centrally on the Right Joystick (RJ) will allow you to take an action on a focused item. Its four directions keys will allow you to move the focus accordingly, pretty much like the four arrow keys on a computer keyboard or the navigation joystick of a mobile phone. Navigation wheels M: When the wheel is moved towards the right, the Braille display will move to the next 12 / 40 characters. When it is moved to the left, the Braille display will move to the previous 12 / 40 characters. 3.8 esys shortcuts esys Shortcut Description On a tree or list : previous item On a tree or list : next item Move focus to next item When editing an edit box field : move cursor right Move focus to previous item When editing an edit box field : move cursor left Activate a focused item On a tree : show a folder’s content Move Braille display forward Move Braille display backwards Put Braille display on the beginning of a line + When on a tree : Move up one folder 4 APPLICATIONS 4.1 USB Application 4.1.1 Introduction This application will enable you to use your esys as a PC input/output interface. You will need to connect the USB cable contained in the box of the esys and to launch the screen reader on the PC. Once the application is started you will see on your Braille display one of the following messages : “usb cable connected” or “usb cable disconnected”. If connected, any information read by the PC will be displayed on the Braille display. Note : esys will automatically switch on when connected to a PC via USB. In order to switch it off (that is to put it to SLEEP mode), you will need to unplug the USB cable. 4.1.2 Settings with JawsTM Connect esys to the PC via USB cable; in JAWS, go to Braille Options and select esys as your default unit on USB. Put your esys in USB mode then start up Jaws. When Jaws is on USB mode, it is possible to unplug then plug back the cable without having to restart JAWS. 4.2 Bluetooth Connection 4.2.1 Introduction Using this application will allow you to use the Bluetooth interface of esys. It will display the following text : “activation” or “Bluetooth activation…”, then will display the status of your Bluetooth connection in one of the following ways. Bluetooth deactivated Bluetooth is not activated. Bluetooth disconnected The Bluetooth interface is activated and other Bluetooth devices can look for it. Bluetooth connected The Bluetooth interface is activated and linked with another Bluetooth device. 4.2.2 Menu On/Off This will enable you to switch on or off the Bluetooth connexion on your esys. When you switch on your esys, the Bluetooth Mode is off (this is done to save power). As soon as you go into the Bluetooth application, the Bluetooth connexion will become enabled. As a consequence, you will mostly be using this menu item in order to disable Bluetooth. Identifier This functionality opens a sub menu allowing you to change the name and PIN code on the Bluetooth connector of the esys. 4.2.3 Identifier Menu name>esys-xxx This edit box allows you to give a name to the Bluetooth interface of the esys. This is the name by which the esys will be identified as a Bluetooth device and which will appear on your mobile phone or your PC. “esys-” will always remain in the name, since this is the tag that enables phone screen readers to identify esys as a Braille Device. In case you decide to change this name, you will need to synchronise again with the mobile phone. pin>0000 This dialog box enables you to change the personal pin code which you will need to know when connecting to your PC or mobile phone. Ok This button allows you to save the newly typed in PIN code numbers. Cancel This button will exit the menu, ignoring any changes you would have made. Restore Factory Settings This button will restore the original values of the Bluetooth interface. You will need to confirm wanting to do this by pressing on the yes button. 4.2.4 esys can be connected to the PC via Bluetooth Settings and actions on your esys: Select the Bluetooth mode, and then enter the Bluetooth menu by pressing centrally on the LJ. Note down the name of the Bluetooth connexion and the associated PIN code by following the steps described in section “Identifier Menu”. Settings and actions on your PC: With the help of the Bluetooth toolbox, execute a search of devices; you should find the esys as a Bluetooth device; you then have to synchronise your PC and esys, using the COM port number provided to you. Then Adjust the JAWS settings (options menu, Braille) so that the default Braille device is set to esys, with the COM port number used to synchronise and «9600,n,8,1» as settings. Start Jaws. The Jaws.ini file (in the folder C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\7.10) should then include an x in the Braille line as follows : Braille1Port=COMx :9600,e,8,1. [BrailleDisplays] Braille1Name=ESYS Braille1LongName=ESYS Braille1Driver=esysiris Braille1Port=COMx :9600,e,8,1 As long as this is configured on your PC, all you will need to use the Bluetooth connexion will be to place the esys in Bluetooth mode and start up jaws in order for the two to communicate together. In such cases, you may switch on and off the esys without having to reboot Jaws. 4.2.5 Using esys with your mobile phone. You can use the Bluetooth connexion of the esys to connect it to your mobile phone; this will work with Symbian Phones, equipped with Talks or Mobile Speak. Mobile Speak integrate the driver into software release (3.25 and higher), you simply need to select esys from Mobile Speak menu. Talk doesn’t integrate the driver. You will need to install a specific driver following steps below. Installing the esys driver on your mobile phone with Talks. In order to do this, you will need to have installed on a computer the PC Nokia Suite Software (which is normally given to you with your phone) as well as the Esys60.sis and Esys60_3rd.sisx file which you will find on the CD that is shipped with your esys. Depending on your phone, double click on one of the esys files (see Appendixes for a list of supported mobile phones). It is recommended that you chose to install the driver on the external memory card of the phone; you will have to go through a series of dialog boxes to finish the installation procedure. In case PC Nokia Suite is not installed on your computer, you can right click on one of the esys files and send to Bluetooth and finally chose your phone. In this case, the driver will be sent to your phone’s In Box. You will then have to open that message on your phone and follow the installation procedure. Once the installation is completed, you need to go in the Braille Settings of Talks and chose the appropriate Braille table language file. Adjust settings on esys: Chose the « Bluetooth » mode on esys; you will go into the Bluetooth menu (by clicking on LJ); then activate the “identifier” menu and note the name of the adapter and the PIN Code number. Then go back to the main menu and select Bluetooth Mode again. Adjust settings on the phone: Synchronise your esys with the mobile phone; to do that, you need to go in the Bluetooth menu of your phone and ask it to Add a Device; switch on the Bluetooth connexion on your phone. In the list of devices that you will see, you should have the esys identifier you noted earlier; select it and type in your PIN code (PIN Code is 0000 by default). You can now use your esys in conjunction with your phone. If you want to toggle between “No Braille” and “Braille esys”, you can use the shortcut [Talks]+[pick up]. You can also do this in the TALKS Menu configuration. 4.3 Taking notes on your esys (notepad application) 4.3.1 Foreword The note taking application of your esys will enable you to easily type text; there is one limitation to how you type in text; you can only type paragraphs up to 6Kb of length ; you will need to type in ENTER (thus creating a new paragraph) in order to continue typing. Similarly, if you open a text on you esys which contains paragraphs of more than 6Kb, additional paragraphs will be created to respect this 6Kb limitation. In order to use the notepad, you will need to have a mini SD memory card in the card slot. Temporary files will be created on the mini-SD card as you edit your document ; as long as you do not save your document, additional temporary files will be created ; we recommend that you save your document frequently enough so that the creation of those temporary files does not end up slowing down your system. esys includes a data retrieval program that will allow you to retrieve the data of a document even if the mini-SD Card has been taken away or the esys has been rebooted. You will only loose the information that was modified and not saved in the paragraph, not the document. However you should only retrieve the mini-SD Card after the file has been closed (by using the File Menu and Close). 4.3.2 File Menu New (Alt f; n / Ctrl n) This function will close any open document and start a new document which you can immediately edit. Open (Alt f; o / Ctrl o) This function opens a dialog box with a tree list of all available files; the dialog box includes two buttons to accept or cancel. If you were on an opened document, you will be asked to save that document. Note: you can accept to open a file by activating while on the tree name. Read (Alt f; r) This function works like the « Open » function, except that you cannot edit the text (the cursor remains invisible); this read mode is useful for large documents, as all navigating functions will have their speed increased significantly. Close (Alt f; c / Ctrl F4) This function will close any opened document. You will then access a new document, which you can edit. Save (Alt f; s /Ctrl s) This function enables you to save any modifications you have made in a document. This will save the document under its current name; if you have not yet given the document a name, you will be asked to do so. Save As (Alt f; a) This function will let you save the document that is currently open in a given file and with a given name. In its basic use, when the dialog box opens, you will be in an edit box and you can type the file name. Just type in the name you wish and then press ENTER (9A keys of the Braille Keyboard). The file will then be saved under the current folder. If you want to save it under a different folder, you will first need to chose in which folder you would like to save the document. To do this, put the focus on the tree name and chose a folder by looking at the tree; then go back to edit mode and type in your file name. File Manager (Alt f; m) With this function, you can: Create a new folder, Cancel a folder or a file, Re-name a file or folder. To do this, first select a file or folder, then activate the button of the function you want to use. For a new folder, type in a new name and ENTER. To delete a folder, select the folder and confirm the action by pressing ENTER. To re-name, type in the new name of the folder and accept the changes. 4.3.3 Edit Menu Find (Alt e; f / Ctrl f) This function allows you to search backwards or forwards for a letter-sequence, starting from the cursor location. To do this, type in the letter-sequence (for ex: a word) and use the button “Next”. By accepting, you will then start a search towards the end of the document. Find Next (Alt e; n / F3) This will trigger a new search (with the same word) towards the end of the document. Find Previous (Alt e; p / Shift F3) This will trigger a search backwards to the previous occurrence of the word. Insert Tag (Alt e; t / Ctrl F2) This functions marks the line of the document at which the cursor is located. This will enable you to travel back to this line by using the “Go to Tag” function, even after you have closed and re-opened the document. The tag is kept in a hidden file on the SD card. Go To Tag (Alt e; g / F2) This will allow you to go straight to the line where you have left a tag. 4.3.4 Using the Braille Keyboard. The Braille Keyboard is used to type in text in the notepad application. Special functions called Bramigraph, reproduce the standard keyboard keystrokes and can be used to execute the following commands. Braille Combination Braille function Command 4A Up Cursor goes upwards 6A Down Cursor goes downwards 5A Right Cursor goes right 2A Left Cursor goes left 123A Home Cursor goes beginning of line 456A End Cursor goes end of line 78A, 123A Ctrl + home Cursor goes beginning of document 78A, 456A Ctrl + end Cursor goes end of document 13A Page up Cursor goes 20 lines upwards 46A Page down Cursor goes 20 lines downwards 9A Enter Carriage return 36A Delete Delete the character on cursor right side 2356A Delete Delete the character on cursor right side 9 Backspace Delete the character on cursor left side 35A Insertion Type in insertion/substitution 129 F2 Go to tag 78A, 129 Ctrl + F2 Tag 149 F3 Find next 1259 F8 Lock selection mode 1245A Escape Unlock selection mode 4.3.5 Specific Shortcuts esys Description Cursor on previous paragraph Cursor on next paragraph Cursor right Cursor left Braille line ahead Braille line backwards + Cursor at the beginning of the document (Ctrl+Home) + Cursor at the end of the document (Ctrl+End) + Cursor at the end of the line (End) + Cursor at the beginning of the line (Home) + Cursor at the end of the document (Ctrl+End) + Cursor at the beginning of the document (Ctrl+Home) + Tag + Go to tag + + + Cursor 20 lines down + M Left > Cursor 20 lines up + Open find dialog box + + Find next + Find previous 4.4 Alarm Clock 4.4.1 Foreword esys includes a clock and a ring tone. This will allow you to program an alarm at a given time for each day of the week. This application looks like a line including the date, the time and a button showing you whether or not the alarm is switched on. The displayed time is refreshed every second.
